Triglycerides Lowering Foods​

How do you think you would feel if your doctor said to you “You need to start eating triglycerides lowering foods >>>last year!<<<.”

I think that would be pretty scary, don’t you? Triglycerides are associated with risk of heart attacks and strokes.

What are the triglycerides lowering foods​ anyway? In fact, what are triglycerides?

“Triglycerides are a type of fatty acid in your body. When you eat more calories than you use, your body converts the excess calories into fat in the form of triglycerides and stores it in fat cells. Some of the triglycerides are always circulating in your blood. Triglycerides provide an energy reserve for your body. Whenever you need extra energy, your body breaks the triglycerides down into energy packets that your cells can use.”

Now it seems handy to have a certain amount of energy in reserve, don’t you think? If you have a period of extra exertion, or perhaps a sickness where you can’t eat, you can open these ‘energy packets’, and survive.

“The most important risk factor for high triglycerides is obesity. You are also at risk for high triglycerides if you have diabetes, thyroid problems or kidney disease. Some forms of high triglycerides are inherited. Some medications, such as estrogen, birth control pills, water pills, beta blockers and steroids, can cause high triglycerides. Eating too much sugar and fat, and drinking alcohol can also cause high triglycerides.”

Steve goes on to add:

“White sugar is poison to you. It causes your blood sugar to spike and fall until you develop insulin resistance. It contains no nutrients, only energy. It converts almost immediately to triglycerides. Corn syrup and corn sugars are just as bad, and they are in everything. Read labels, and watch out for sweeteners and flavorings. Any ingredient that ends in -ose or -ol is probably some kind of sugar.”

Similar to the diet I strongly recommend to decrease the risks of high triglycerides, that author advises that you eliminate sweets, junk foods (usually laced with trans fats and fried with added sugars) and alcohol from your meals.

    Excellent healthy article Dianne, thank you very much for sharing this with us.
    Honestly if my doctor was to tell me that…I’d look at him perplexed and ask him to try speak to me in Chinese – that’s how much I understand triglyceride!
    But now, I have not excuse, thanks to your article I am in the know and know what to do to be healthy and cautious.

    Hello Dianne,
    Great read! It is a scary things when you do combine sweets and fat – your body can suffer in the long term and in a way that you really would not like. Thanks for the information and tips. I like the article by Steve. It resonated with me. I will try to reduce some of the sweets and wine in my diet and see if I can shake loose a few pounds. Thanks for sharing.

      Hi Michelle. You will probably drop some weight just by eliminating some of your starches. Eat them in the morning and you’ve got the whole day to burn them lol. You look healthy actually! Yet it’s good to know how to manage fat and sugar consumption as we age, and balance it with our activities. Thanks for dropping in today!

    Hello Dee, great article and good information. I think my rule of thumb is stay away from anything that is white or processed. I am a big believer in whole foods and organic. That way I know exactly what is in the next forkful. For health reasons (and ethical) I went totally vegan, no wheat, no sugar, no dairy and no nightshades. It has been over 20 years and I love my food and my energy. I do believe we are what we eat.. do you agree?

      Hi Ariel. I’m not sure we’re exactly what we eat, but I am aware that what we eat affects our nervous system as well as all other systems. Individuals have to discover what their best diet is. Yet I have to say that there is enough evidence that processed fats and non organic foods including food lot meats, are very damaging to one’s health in disastrous ways. You know! I’m glad to hear that your journey to regain health and keep it has been successful!

    Dianne,
    I broke my heel bone last fall, gained about 10 pounds because of lack of movement. I still have not gotten back to exercise level as before. I will look at your link to see if will be of any help with the small amount of weight I need to loose. I need to get on my bike more, I still cannot run or walk for a long time without pain. Do you have any suggestions for someone who just need to loose about 10 pounds.

      If you have a pool you can do intensive high resistance exercises in the water (kicking, jogging, arm movements) , without your weight on your heel. Those really burn calories and build muscle too!
