Next Porsche Cayman & Boxster could get a 6-cylinder hybrid
Porsche had announced that the next-generation Boxster and Cayman would be EVs. Since then, the company has backtracked on its decision and instead has decided to offer the Boxster and Cayman with both electric and ICE powertrains.
According to a recent media report, the new-gen Boxster and Cayman sports cars will feature a hybrid powertrain similar to the latest iteration of the Porsche 911 GTS. More specifically, the brand’s upcoming entry-level sports cars are likely to be powered by a 6-cylinder petrol engine paired with a hybrid system.
It also means that the current 2.0-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder unit is unlikely to be upgraded to comply with Euro 7 regulations.
The switch to a 6-cylinder engine is a welcome move. However, the hybrid unit is slightly heavier courtesy of the large battery and other hardware.
