Max Verstappen wins the Nuburgring NLS race on debut
Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen has won the Nurburgring NLS race on debut. Max, along with teammate Chris Lullham, piloted his Ferrari 296 GT3 (#31) to victory, 25 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
Verstappen had been preparing for this race since May, when he first tested the 296 GT3 at the Nurburgring Nordschleife. It didn’t take long for the Red Bull F1 driver to get into the groove, though, and he went on to set a lap record of 7 min 45 seconds during free practice earlier this weekend.
In qualifying, Max and Chris put their Ferrari in P3 with a lap time of 8 min 09.126 seconds, 3 seconds down on the pole sitter. But he raced into the lead when the lights went green.
At one point, the Emil Frey Racing Ferrari (#31) was leading by almost a minute. However, by the time the chequered flag was waved, the others had caught up and reduced the gap to 25 seconds.
Max is certainly not done yet with GT3 racing. As per rumors, he might be back for the full Nurburgring 24 Hours race next year.
